Connect Claude Code

Choose a Claude route with Anthropic support, configure the Orbis URL, model and key, then verify a real request.

Connect an installed Claude Code CLI to Orbis. For installation and a complete first project, see the illustrated Claude Code beginner guide.

1. Choose a model and route, then get a key

Open Models, choose a Claude model and a route that supports Anthropic Messages, then create a key for that route. One example is the Claude Code · AH route for Claude Haiku 5.5.

This guide covers Claude models; the chosen route determines the available models and protocols. A key is bound to its route. Changing only the model ID does not switch routes. Both the main model and background small model must be available to that key.

2. Configure the URL and model

On the route's Quick access → Tools → Claude Code tab, select your key and merge the generated settings into ~/.claude/settings.json, or %USERPROFILE%\.claude\settings.json on Windows. Back up an existing file and keep its other settings.

For Haiku, the file's env includes:

{
  "env": {
    "ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL": "https://api.orbiorbi.com",
    "ANTHROPIC_MODEL": "claude-haiku-5-5",
    "ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL": "claude-haiku-5-5"
  }
}

Do not append /v1. When changing models, copy the exact ID from the connection page and check the background small-model setting too.

3. Enter the key and start

Open a terminal in your project directory. Use the command for your shell, then paste the key at the hidden-input prompt.

$env:ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN = [System.Net.NetworkCredential]::new('', (Read-Host 'Paste your Orbis key' -AsSecureString)).Password
claude
# Zsh, the default shell on macOS
printf 'Paste your Orbis key: '
read -rs ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN
printf '\n'
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN
claude

The variable is available only to this terminal and programs it starts. Enter the key again in a new terminal. If you already use ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN or apiKeyHelper, check which credential source is active before enabling another. Configure editor extensions separately using the official Claude Code gateway guide.

4. Verify the connection

  1. Run /status and check the Orbis URL, credential source, model and working directory.
  2. Send “Reply with OK only.” Check the model, route and charge in Usage logs. This request uses API allowance.
  3. Ask Claude Code to read a small file in a practice directory and check its actual tool record. A successful text response does not prove every tool is compatible.
SymptomWhat to check
401 / asked to sign in againWhether the process received the key, or an old credential setting overrides it
404 / model not foundURL without /v1, exact model ID and a key bound to the chosen route
Main chat works, small tasks failWhether the background small model is available on the route
429 / no allowanceAccount balance, key limits and route limits
